Mirror

This work, together with Cakes and Flipbook are components in an installation entitled Entropy, looks to the opposing forces of decay and preservative labor. The interior of the Mirror is comprised of porcelain tiles, each with a single facial feature, invoking peeling paint.

The frame for Mirror is plastic wrap wound around nails in sizes varying from ½ inch to 8 inches.. Plastic wrap was a WWII invention, subsequently domesticated, that invokes preservation. Not only was the repetitive process of wrapping nails wonderfully satisfying, another project, Souvenir, was born from this activity. Cooking dinner one night, during the summer of wrapping nails, I was about to throw away a bit of plastic from a mushroom container and thought, “This is crazy. I am buying plastic wrap for my roses and throwing away the very material I need.”

I am currently converting all the plastic my family uses into a yearlong length of rope.
