A Participatory Project Harvesting Our Material Excess

A collaborative project with Rebecca Keller in conjunction with Art in the Open, Philadelphia and with special thanks to everyone at Bartam’s Garden.

1. HARVEST material excess
2. DIP in plaster
3. DRAW over contours
4. FEAST your eyes on the abundance

The process begins with 'harvesting' cast-off items (which would otherwise be thrown away). Exposing process and encouraging participation, we invite the audience to join in dipping the objects in plain white plaster, creating a unified aesthetic out of a disparate materials.

When the “blanks” are dry, we and interested passersby use simple pencils
(many also plucked from throw-outs and donations) to create marks/lines/shapes on the plastered objects—taking cues from the folds, dimples and other irregularities in the surface, or curves and angles in the shape of the objects. Thus the pleasure of drawing on a smooth surface meets the idea of a sewing circle or other group experience.

As the three day on-site project evolved, everyone adds their work to a table draped with a white linen tablecloth, also drawn on with pencils, creating a sort of 'visual feast' or 'groaning board'. At the end of everyday, we documented the growing 'tableau' and offered participants a image of this collective action.
